Specifications
The Allen and Wheelock Army is one of the more unique Civil War sidearms. These 6 shot .44 caliber revolvers are easily recognizable thanks to their distinctive loading mechanism. The trigger actually unlatches from the pistol and is incorporated into the ramrod.
It’s been reported by some researchers that only 700 of these guns were built, but based on the number of examples that remain in decent condition today that is highly unlikely. The serial numbering system used by Allen and Wheelock for these pistols was inconsistent, leading to many potential duplicates or guns not being marked at all.
We know for sure that the US Government bought just over 500 of the Allen Revolvers and nearly all of those guns ended up in use by the 2nd and 3rd Michigan Cavalry. The Allen Revolvers actually turn up in the holsters of these cavalrymen in period photos.
This particular Allen and Wheelock Army retains some of its original finish with much patina present as well. The grips have several deeper dings and gouges toward the bottom, but the unique action of the revolver functions flawlessly. This is a great opportunity to own a unique piece of Civil War and potentially Michigan history.
